Towards a common susceptibility testing

چکیده
We agree with Gould’s comments about the shortcomings of the Stokes’ method and the need for the ‘comparability of data between different centres across the country so that resistance surveillance data can be reliably compared’. In fact we would go further and suggest that, since bacteria do not respect national borders, there should be worldwide comparability of data. Where we part company with Gould is in how we approach that goal. In his paper, Gould outlines the relative merits of agar disc diffusion and breakpoint MIC methods and, in doing so, indicates many of the factors that affect the reproducibility of the former method. These include inoculum, temperature, atmosphere and generation time of the bacterium. Surely, however, these affect both methods? Furthermore, we would not agree with the view that only the broth dilution method lends itself well to automation: automatic plate readers, with their data collation system, have a lot in their favour. Other than on these points we would not disagree with Gould’s precis of the pros and cons of the different approaches. The thrust of Gould’s paper is to argue for the worldwide use of the NCCLS method for susceptibility testing and here we disagree. We believe that the US-derived method, although having a number of creditable features, is too rigid in its concept to be recommended for use in the UK (or for many other EU countries). Our reasons can be listed:

Received: 14 April, 2009 Accepted: 21 Oct, 2009 Abstract Background & Aims: Antimicrobial resistance among bacterial pathogens is a worldwide problem. The selection of initial treatment is made on an empiric basis and susceptibility testing is important to modify empirical therapy, especially for treatment of common bacterial pathogens. The aim of the present study was to determine the antimi...

This study evaluated the nasopharyngeal microbial flora and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of the one hundred and thirty Holstein calves with dairy calf pneumonia from dairy farms of Mashhad Suburb between September 2002 and August 2003 . The most common micro-organisms isolated were Pasteurella multocida 80 (61.54%), Mannheimia haemolytica 41 (31.54%), Bacillus sp. 15 (11.54%), Staphy...
متن کاملIsolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogenic Aeromonas media isolated from diseased Koi carp (Cyprinus carpio koi)
Aeromonas infections are the most common bacterial disease of cultured fish in China. In this study, a gram-negative bacillus was isolated from the liver of diseased koi carp (Cyprinus carpio koi), and named strain KC-2. The results of morphological and biochemical tests, as well as phylogenetic analysis derived from 16S rRNA and gyrB sequences indicated that the isolated strain KC-2 was highly...

Candida albicans remains the most frequent cause of fungal infections in an expanding population of compromised patients and candidiasis is now the third most common infection in US hospitals. Different manifestations of candidiasis are associated with biofilm formation, both on host tissues and/or medical devices (i.e. catheters). Biofilm formation carries negative clinical implications, as ce...

Background and Objective: Reliable methods of detection of antimicrobial resistance are of paramount importance in the treatment and management of infections caused by coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS). The objective of the present study was to compare and evaluate the performance of disc diffusion and E test (Epsilometer test) methods for antimicrobial testing of coagulase ne...
